The Most Difficult Piece of Writing Imaginable

He was my biggest supporter these past few years; asking if he could drive me to the workshops I'd been conducting so he could be with me during the car rides. He'd head to a resturant and drink coffee and read the newspaper while he waited for me. I wondered sometimes at his simple need to be close to me. Each time a check or an acceptance came in, he was at my side, a wide grin across his face. He'd pull me close and tell me how proud he was of me. It was he who encouraged me to write the…See More

Climbing Jacob's Ladder, Act II

Yesterday my daughter Elizabeth called her house shortly before noon to inform us that the surgeon had, indeed, found cancer in Jacob’s lung. No bigger than a lima bean, the cancerous growth meant that, just six months after his treatment, Jacob’s Wilms’ tumor had returned. He will now be facing additional treatment that likely involves a stem cell transplant and stronger chemotherapy drugs that will be administered through a Hickman line that was inserted during surgery.Time stopped as I stood…See More

Leap Day Writer

What did you do with your extra day?Growing up, I had only one question about Leap Years; when did the children born on February 29th celebrate their birthday? I never asked why there was such a thing as a Leap Year. It took me another 30+ years and a child asking me why this morning, before I would look for the answer to that question.Apparently, Leap Years are needed to keep our calendar in alignment with the Earth's revolutions around the sun. It takes the Earth approximately 365.242199 days…See More

THANK YOU FOR YOU PATIENCE

Thank you, my unknown friend, for posting this sign in our local library:There was only one word missing from the poster when I saw it.  Now there are two. I paused a moment before making my choice. I already have LOVE, I am surrounded by KINDNESS and BEAUTY in friends and family.  WISHING FOR SOMETHING BETTER would be saying all that is right with my life is not enough and wishing the rightness away. MONEY,…See More

Have you been published?  Yes

If published, please tell us about itOver 200 articles and essays in magazines and newspapers as well as essays in 14 anthologies, including four Chicken Soup titles. One book on homeschooling published by small publisher in 1996.

What are you working on now?  Non-fiction ethnographic research on the history of couponing and refunding that includes my personal history and profiles of other avid couponers.

Are you currently shopping a project for publicationYes

What are you currently seekingAgent, agent or publisher for current work in progress

Tell us about some of your favorite books, television shows or movies?  I love books by Jodi Picoult, Elizabeth Berg, and Jan Karon. Faithfully watch "The Middle" and "Suburgatory."

What are your thoughts about publishing?  I used to think it was enough to simply write well. It was 20+ years ago when I began writing, but the publishing world is changing. Now I know I have to build up a platform, diversify by teaching couponing workshops and writing classes, and learn to market myself and my work.Strangely enough, I am enjoying the challenge.

Can we quote you? Give us your favorite quote or saying. You can make it up or share one from someone you admire"When God opens a door, walk right through it."  I heard this at a writer's conference recently and have been following that advice. In a matter of a few weeks I have been hired to teach couponing workshops and a writing class, as well as speaking engagements at a women's retreat and a writer's conference. After my first couponing workshop, a large city newspaper approached me to do a recurring column. I have never had so much fun in my life, and all because these doors were opened to me, or I opened them and walked right through!

Thanks for reaching out Mary! I'd love to read a story you'd like to submit for my Meant to Be book.. only problem is that since I'll likely self-publish it, I don't think I can pay for stories.. but if you are still interested, please send me something at marytokeefe@gmail.com.

Thanks!

Mary
