Thanks, Jane. I'll check this out. My original question (which apparently did not come through here) is this: I'm writing a novel and using several real-life characters in it. I am, of course, embellishing their characters and placing them in fictional situations. I refer to them by first name only, although they will be recognizable in their circles. I am not characterizing any of them in a negative light so not concerned about libel. However, I've been advised to have them sign a release or waiver granting me permission to base my characters on them. Does anyone have such a form or know where I can get one? Thanks!

Janet, I'm not seeing your original question on the group, but there's a discussion about the legality of using real people in your fiction here:

The answer is, it looks as if you can do it without obtaining a legal release under many conditions, but check it out and perhaps contact an attorney yourself.

send it to me in email as a doc file at jan@secondstar.us and I will read what you have written. I will be kind but direct.

I also am so totally impressed you are writing and pursuing a dream. Keep up the work because you will only improve with time and practice.

Jade, I was able to download the file but also could not open it. What format or word processor are you using?

A TXT file or RTF file would be good for me as well.

Thanks. I got a file this time, but I can't open it. :-(  Would it be possible for you to save it as a TXT or RTF file?

Jade, I can't get your link to work. Can you try it again?

Thanks, Jane and James. :)

Jane is so right.  The more polished a novel MS is before pitching the better.  I recently had my first novel professionally edited and that led to some rewrites that made for a much better read.
