My child...no longer a child...and I shared the Harry Potter set of books. Honestly, he never was much of a reader. We also shared a slew of Mangas--graphic novels.  His teachers and I celebrated every time he read one. With the Potter books, we read them and then went to see the movies -- so it was a fantastical journey from age 8 till just last year at 20.

I never listened to those who lamented about the witchcraft and dark side. I rejoiced that there was a book that a kid like mine would read!

Love the Harry Potter books!!  Actually, I think they should be studied as prescribed books in school...maybe first year university too.  I think those books, particularly bridge the generation gap between child and parent - it's a magical way to share something with your child (pardon the pun!).

No pardon necessary ;) I love a good pun.

I sent my son, in his last high school years, to a private Christian school -- to keep in out of trouble more than the curriculum actually.  He needed control.  When the headmaster had concerns over his reading material, you can imagine the kind of "enlighten" conversation I had.  HP books allow the kids to imagine something out of the norm and are as charming as the old Mother Goose and Grimm stories. 

I also told the old fart that Chris read Goosebumps!
